Welcome to the Pioneer Mountain Trail Crew With the 50th
anniversary of the Pioneer Mountain Trail coming up, we have decided to start
a major effort to rebuild and improve it for a grand reopening. To complete
this task, we are beginning a volunteer Trail Crew that will meet once a
month. The Trail Crew will meet at the
Picnic area, on the first Saturday of each month, at 9:00am. There we will
give a description of the day’s task, hand out tools, and discuss any safety
concerns. Then we will head out to the work location on the trail. We will be
clearing, marking, and relocating trail sections or building water bars or
bridges. Check back here to find out what we could be doing every month. We
should always be finished and back to the Picnic area by 4:00pm each day. Who can attend? Because we will
be using sharp woods tools, and at times doing hard labor, we ask that
attendees be at least Boy Scout Age. Because the McKee Scout Reservation
cannot guarantee 2-deep leadership, we ask that youth (under 18) only attend
with their parent(s) or Scout Leader(s). There will never be a charge to
attend, and you should bring your own water bottles and sack lunch for the
trail. Next
Meeting: Saturday April 5, 2008,
9:00am at the Picnic Area. Task:
Begin building a truss bridge
across the creek between the picnic area and the lee shelter. Wear:
Comfortable boots, work gloves,
and proper clothing for the weather. Please
Bring: Water bottles and a sack
lunch.
Map of the
Pioneer Mountain Trail February
2, 2008 At our
first meeting/work day, we cleared the trail from the picnic area to the Lee
shelter. The trail is open and ready to hike, unless there is a lot of rain.
A tree across the creek is damming the water and making it too deep to cross
in cold weather. It had already been decided to build a bridge, so that will
become the March project. March
1, 2008 Because of the weather, we were unable to start the
Bridge. We cut some fallen trees off the trail near the COPE road, and did
some scouting for trail relocations on the East side of Grape Knob. There is
growing awareness of the Trail Crew, and we look forward to having all that
are interested join us. See you
on the trail! |
